How do dental bridges fill teeth gaps?

Dental bridges continue to be a reliable way to replace missing teeth, and with various types of dental bridges available, Wahlen Dentistry patients have several options. Dr. Jennifer Wahlen and the team in Perry, Utah, can walk patients through the types of dental bridges used in restorative dentistry when they visit for their initial consultation appointment.

What are the different types of dental bridges?

  • Traditional dental bridge. This is the most common type of bridge and is typically made from ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold. The traditional dental bridge consists of two crowns placed over two abutment teeth and a false tooth or teeth between them. The crowns and false tooth/teeth are fused together as one unit and used for replacing missing teeth. The remaining natural teeth must be properly contoured to support the bridge
  • Cantilever dental bridge. Similar to the traditional bridge, a cantilever bridge also consists of a false tooth/teeth and two crowns. However, the false tooth/teeth are only supported by one abutment tooth instead of two. This type of bridge is used when there is only one natural tooth next to the missing tooth/teeth. The remaining natural tooth must be strong enough to support the bridge
  • Maryland Dental Bridge. This type of dental bridge is made from porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or even acrylic or plastic teeth and gums supported by a porcelain or metal framework. The wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to the back end of the adjacent natural teeth, with minimal preparation needed. This type of bridge is ideal for replacing front teeth and is also called a resin-bonded bridge
  • Implant-supported dental bridge. An implant-supported bridge uses dental implants as support instead of natural teeth. The implants are surgically placed into the patient’s jawbone and act as artificial tooth roots. This type of bridge is used when there are multiple missing teeth in a row or if the remaining natural teeth are not strong enough to support a traditional or cantilever bridge. Implant-supported bridges provide a more stable and long-lasting solution for missing teeth

Which type of bridge is best for filling my teeth gaps?

Each type of dental bridge has its unique benefits and is used in specific situations. It is essential to consult your dentist to determine the best option for restoring your smile and oral health.
