What can be done for a chipped front tooth?
Imperfections can occur within the smile over time, just from daily living. For some, situations happen in which repair is necessary. This includes chips on the natural tooth structure. Chips on the teeth near the front of the smile are the most noticeable and can be addressed with the assistance of an experienced dental professional. The dentists at Wahlen Dentistry in Perry, Utah, are here to help with two common solutions: porcelain veneers and composite resin bonding.
What can cause a chipped front or back tooth?
There are several potential reasons why a patient might experience a chipped tooth, including:
- A sudden impact/trauma, such as a fall or being hit in the face
- Biting down on something hard, like a piece of ice or a popcorn kernel
- Teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism)
- Weakened tooth structure due to dental decay or previous dental work
How can a chipped tooth be restored?
At Wahlen Dentistry, our team can help you with a chipped tooth in one of two ways:
- Porcelain veneer. A porcelain veneer is a facing fabricated to bond onto the front portion of a tooth to cover an imperfection. It is made to match the patient’s existing teeth to ensure they look natural. It will last up to ten years with proper care and attention and will not stain with time
- Composite resin bonding. Composite resin bonding is an alternative to using porcelain veneers, sometimes called “dental bonding.” This material is applied to a prepared tooth and shaped in place. It is cured with a specialized lighted device and then filed and polished to appear as natural tooth enamel. Composite resin bonding is susceptible to staining, so paying close attention to consuming foods and drinks that can stain is recommended. Most patients will enjoy their dental bonding for a few years before needing replacement
